This class takes intermediate kayakers beyond basic rescues.   Participants will be introduced to techniques to deal with multiple capsizes;  loaded  boats;  & injured paddlers.   Towing techniques, including contact tows and standard in-line tows will also be presented and practiced.   Some tow rigs will be provided for this class and are also available for purchase.

Prerequisites:   Completion of Level 1: Sea Kayak Essentials or equivalent experience. Reliable self-rescue skills (T-rescue & paddle-float) and comfort in up to 2’ seas are required.

NOTE:  This course is offered as part of the program for the South Bass Island Rendezvous.   Participants must have their own sea kayak and equipment.   Limited rentals may be available upon request. 

In this class for beginner to novice paddlers, particpants will learn and practice basic assisted and self-rescue techniques:  the T rescue;  the paddle-float self-rescue; and the rodeo reentry.

NOTE:  This course is offered as part of the program for the South Bass Island Rendezvous.   Participants must have their own sea kayak and equipment.   Limited rentals may be available upon request. 

Participants will paddle to Gibraltar Island  and Put-in-Bay.  On the way, basic strokes will be practiced and refined, with emphasis on proper body position for maximum efficiency.   Techniques include: sweep strokes, pivot strokes, draws, and braces and paddling backwards.    In addition, rules of the nautical road and group paddling will be emphasized.

Prerequisites:   Knowledge of basic rescues.

This course is designed for those looking for a comprehensive weekend of sea kayaking instruction.  This class is geared for both introductory and intermediate students, and will include instruction in:

• Fundamental paddle strokes
• Edged and leaned turns and maneuvers
• Capsize and recovery
• On-water safety and trip planning
• Multi-Day Trips:  What to pack and how to pack it.
• Basic navigation
• Tow systems and their use.
• Predicting Weather, Wind, and Waves
• Incident management

The Immersion Weekend combines instruction with exploratory day trips around the Erie Islands, giving paddlers plenty of time to practice the skills learned during instructional sessions.   Evenings will offer a chance for presentations, slide shows, and socializing. This class is ideal for new paddlers as well as intermediates as instruction will be tailored to fit your needs. All equipment, good food and comfortable lodging are included in this program

Spend up to 4 days paddling along the southern shore of Lake Erie.  This guided tour of the Pennsylvania coast features paddles along rugged cliffs, windswept dune beaches, and serene bays and interior lagoons.   During the course of the Sojourn, you'll be treated to a series of talks by naturalists and environmental protection groups regarding the Lake Erie environment.   A highlight of this trip is the ability to camp on the beach at Presque Isle State Park, a 7-mile long sand spit that juts out into Lake Erie and is home to one of the most beautiful beaches on the lower Great Lakes.

All meals (most catered by Erie restauarants) are provided, along with entertainment in the evenings and a shuttle bus (cars are moved to the take out each day, so you end up back at your car after each leg of the trip).

A tentative itinerary is as follows:

• August 13:  Meet at Camp Fitch in evening, introductions, safety briefings, dinner, live music, and beach campfire.
• August 15:  Paddle from Camp Fitch to Walnut Creek.
• August 16:  Paddle from Walnut Creek to Beach 11 on Presque Isle State Park.   Evening program includes a full moon hike or paddle, or chair massages for those feeling a little sore.
• August 17:  Morning yoga on the beach, paddle the interior lagoons and Erie Bay.   Kayak class offerings,  tour of Tom Ridge Environmental Center.
• August 18:  Paddle from Beach 11 to Shades Beach.

Cost for the Sojourn is as follows:

• Full Sojourn (Wednesday, August 13 @ 5:30pm to Sunday, August 17 @ 2pm):  $160.00
• Single day with one overnight:  $45.00
• Single day with lunch only:  $30.00

Paddlers must provide their own equipment (subject to Sojourn guidelines).  Limited rentals are available through 41 North at a rate of $55.00 per day with a 2-day minumum.

The Tall Ships are coming to Cleveland, and one of the best ways to see them is from the seat of a sea kayak!   From July 4-7, a group of approximately twelve sailing ships will arrive in Cleveland Harbor for a visit as they sail from the St. Lawrence Seaway to Duluth, Minnesota.   The vessels are racing from port to port, and spreading their message of protection and conservation of freshwater resources as they go.  

Invited vessels can include schooners and barques with towering 100-ft masts. A full list of ships can be viewed here.

This special tour departs from Wendy Park on Whiskey Island.  Participants will paddle to Northcoast Harbor for a view of the tall ships from a unique perspective.

NOTE:  The Tall Ships will enter the Port of Cleveland under full sail in an not-to-be missed "Parade of Sail" at 4pm on Wednesday, July 3.
